I am staff advisor on research policy to the Director of AT&T Laboratories Cambridge (formerly ORL). For many years I was head of the Computer Laboratory of Cambridge University. In 1980, I moved to the Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard, Massachusetts. I returned to England in the spring of 1986 in time to become a founding member of ORL and Member for Research Strategy on the Olivetti Research Board.
I have described my years at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory, together with my war experiences in radar and operational research, in Memoirs of a Computer Pioneer, MIT Press, 1985.
My latest book is Computing Perspectives, Morgan-Kaufmann, 1995. I wrote this in the hope that it would help readers to sharpen their existing personal perspectives on the present state of computer science and engineering. I would welcome feedback.
